Nonprofit Structure

Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA was formed in 2008 as a 501c3 nonprofit in Colorado.  The organization is granted its charter from the Basecamp Explorer Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Oslo, Norway. The sole purpose of both organizations is to support philanthropic projects in the Maasai Mara region of Kenya, Africa.  The members of the board of directors of Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA, which is comprised of Americans and Europeans, is approved by the Basecamp Explorer Foundation.  All Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA members have visited the Maasai Mara, Basecamp Explorer.

Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA’s primary role is to raise fund for projects supporting its mission. Most project requests come from Basecamp Explorer Foundation (established in 2000) in Norway and Kenya. The USA board of directors evaluates project proposals, ear-marks available funds for the approved projects, and makes grants to Basecamp Explorer Foundation for implementation. Oversight and regular accountability of all contributions, distributions, management and evaluation of projects is the highest priority of this organization and our partners.

Assisting in management and implementation of grants is Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservation Association (MMWCA), a Kenyan non-profit organized by and representing the 15 conservancies in the Maasai Mara region.

Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA operates with administrative costs well below industry standard, a maximum of 5% of donations. The books are annually audited and approved by the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is comprised of individuals who voluntarily contribute their time and resources and are committed to providing their expertise and experience to furthering the mission of Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA.
