I’m a retired teacher and curious life-long learner with another passion… to support educating Maasai girls through Secondary School (high school) so that they may continue on to higher education.

I am honored to sponsor two girls boarding in Secondary Schools. During a trip to the Maasai Mara I was thrilled to meet Sereti (pictured with me) at her school. She wants to be a wildlife biologist. So I gifted her with an adoption certificate of Talek, a young elephant orphaned near her school and rescued by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi. The wooden white rhino represents those at Nairobi National Park. They are protected because they are considered near-threatened.

The 2023 scholarships for 10 girls and 8 boys provided by generous sponsors through Basecamp Explorer Foundation USA was our beginning. We want to grow our program to reach many students in need with at least 50% girls to prevent early arranged marriages and to promote celebrating their rite of passage into womanhood with a book and a pen instead of outdated traditions which do harm and were outlawed in 2011 in Kenya. Social acceptance and marriage prospects are two reasons FGM persists in some communities. Education is the key socially and academically.

“If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family (nation)” – African proverb
